'A Savior is Coming'

  From the beginning of time, from the fall of the human race into disobedience, from the first chapters of the Old Testament to its end, this first section of the Bible points to One Who would come, the Savior, Messiah. During the four weeks of this Advent season before Christmas, we'll follow four themes through the Old Testament, written centuries before the birth of Jesus, all of which shout, 'A Savior is coming!'

We invite you to follow our family Advent meditations … Sunday, December 3rd, marks the start of the Christmas Advent!

 In the Old Testament God reveals Who He is by telling us His Name. In fact, He relates over 15 Names and many more descriptions that we may know Him. We will see that Jesus identifies with many of the Names of God; yet, even in the Old Testament God announces that He is doing something new -  The word Messiah comes from the Hebrew word massah, meaning to smear or anoint something or someone. Certain people - either a priest (Exodus 28:41), a prophet (1 Kings 19:16) or a king (1 Samuel 16:12) – were anointed as being especially chosen by God for a task. From its first use in the Old Testament 'Messiah' was promised to be the coming King and Judge by God's strength. Abraham and the Lamb

  Abraham and Isaac - Matthew 1:2, Genesis 22 “And Abraham said, ‘God, Himself, will provide  the lamb  for the burnt offering, my son.’ ... And Abraham looked up and behind him he saw a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns."  Genesis 22:8,13 Throughout the Old Testament, God revealed Himself and His plan to men and women stirring their hearts to trust Him as God. Instead of Abraham offering up his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice to God ... God, Himself, would one day provide the pure and perfect Sacrifice in His Son, Jesus, to pay the penalty for our disobedience in unbelief. Our Savior is here - the birth of the King!

  If the Old Testament communicates God's message that, 'A Savior is Coming!', then the New Testament, announces, 'Our Savior is Here!'  -  Luke 2 - announcing to shepherds near the site of Jesus' birth: "That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified,   but the angel reassured them. 'Don’t be afraid!' he said. 'I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people.   The Savior—yes, the Messiah, the Lord —has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David!
