The Names (for teens)

  The angel told Joseph, Jesus' adopted father, 'And you shall call His Name Jesus, for it is He Who will save His people from their sins.' The name Jesus comes from the Hebrew name, Joshua, meaning 'Jehovah saves'. Jehovah was the spoken Name of God. YHWH, too holy for the Jews to utter, meant 'I am' or 'I am Who I am', the Self-existent One (Exodus 3:14)

In Isaiah 43:11 (500BC), God says, 'I am the Lord and there is no savior besides Me.'
In the book of John, Jesus said, '... unless you believe that I am (or I am He), you shall die in your sins.' 

He goes on to say, ‘Before Abraham was born, I am (or I existed). And they picked up stones to stone Him.’ This is one of the reasons Christians believe that Jesus was God in the flesh - only God could save. Jesus -the eternal God becoming man to give eternal life to whoever believes. Astonishing!

Week Three (continued) - The Names

 In the Old Testament God reveals Who He is by telling us His Name. In fact, He relates over 15 Names and many more descriptions that we may know Him. We will see that Jesus identifies with many of the Names of God; yet, even in the Old Testament God announces that He is doing something new -  The word Messiah comes from the Hebrew word massah, meaning to smear or anoint something or someone. Certain people - either a priest (Exodus 28:41), a prophet (1 Kings 19:16) or a king (1 Samuel 16:12) – were anointed as being especially chosen by God for a task. From its first use in the Old Testament 'Messiah' was promised to be the coming King and Judge by God's strength. The Greek word for Messiah was Christ, also taken from a word, christos, meaning to anoint.   John 12 follows the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Abraham and the Lamb

  Abraham and Isaac - Matthew 1:2, Genesis 22 “And Abraham said, ‘God, Himself, will provide  the lamb  for the burnt offering, my son.’ ... And Abraham looked up and behind him he saw a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns."  Genesis 22:8,13 Throughout the Old Testament, God revealed Himself and His plan to men and women stirring their hearts to trust Him as God. Instead of Abraham offering up his son, Isaac, as a sacrifice to God ...
